Out of these, many are looking out for ways to increase the traffic to their websites or blogs and lot many are failing to do so. In this article I list out most popular and effective methods of promoting your website or blog and in the process increase the traffic according to importance in the order.

1. Search engine traffic: This is the most powerful method of promoting your website or blog for free. This is achieved by providing a good content website or blog for the readers so that others can link to your website or blog. The effect of this is you will be recognized as some sort of expert in your chosen topic and therefore more and more people will visit your site on daily basis. It means you will agree to put a text or banner link on your site of others and in exchange they will put yours on their sites. There are some drawbacks to this as you will be giving away valuable outbound links. It is advantageous if you get the inbound links (links pointing to your site from other websites) from the websites with high page rank as your own rank will increase over time and thus will be more helpful to appear higher in the Search engine results.

The popular among them are Digg, Twitter, Technorati, reddit, Del.icio.us, etc. It is way to bookmark your favourite web pages on the Internet online, which can be both public and private, instead of bookmarking them on your browser. These then can be used to share with others on the web, which contain tags, rankings, and other stuff which shows how many people are using your website or blog.

6. Feeds: This is a method where visitors of your website or blog can subscribe to your content freely. This is done by clicking the RSS feed button on any website or blog. This is very popular and used by million of users today. There are services like Feedburner where you can display the number of users who have subscribed to your RSS feeds and bigger this number, more popular you are. This is a kind of marketing yourself telling how popular you are on your chosen topic.
